Churchill Music Tech Students' Unforgettable Trip to Rockfield Studios

This year marked a significant milestone for Churchill Music Tech students as they embarked on their first-ever trip to the legendary Rockfield Studios.

The visit provided a hands-on experience, allowing students to immerse themselves in the same equipment that has been used by countless iconic bands.

Guided by renowned producers Joe Jones and Jack Boston, the students had the unique opportunity to record themselves performing a variety of songs and pieces of music. They explored the studio’s famed reverb chambers and played through an early 60s Marshall amp, rumoured to have been used by Black Sabbath! The students also experimented with complex recording techniques, placing sixteen microphones on the drums for a richly detailed sound.

One of the trip's highlights was a late-night session dedicated to creating alien sounds using old analogue equipment. This creative experiment not only showcased the students' creativity but also their enthusiasm for exploring the depths of music production.

Adding to the experience, they had the privilege of meeting Kingsley Ward MBE, the studio's owner and founder. Ward, known for his captivating stories, shared insights and anecdotes from his illustrious career. Rockfield Studios, recently featured in the Queen biopic, has a storied history. Some even believe that the studio’s weather vane inspired the famous line "anywhere the wind blows" from Queen's iconic song "Bohemian Rhapsody”.

The trip to Rockfield Studios was an invaluable experience for the Churchill Music Tech students, leaving them inspired, with a deeper appreciation for the art of music!
