Churchill Chess Team qualifies for the National Schools Chess Championships
We’re pleased to announce that Churchill Academy & Sixth Form’s Chess Team has progressed to the National Schools Chess Championships, the United Kingdom’s leading and most prestigious Team Chess Competition for schools.
On Monday 27th November, we took two chess teams, Churchill A and Churchill B, to the regional qualifying stages of the National Schools Chess Championships to compete against twenty six teams from across the region.
Churchill A demonstrated their skillful chess abilities, beating Chew Valley, Kings Gloucester and QEH, whilst Churchill B played exceptionally against Kings Gloucester B and Clifton High to take the win.
It was Churchill A’s solid wins that placed them in third position in the regional competition and will now compete in the national finals. Churchill B just missed out on qualification despite their success in the rounds.
Noteworthy performances came from Adam Barringer and Samuil Vasilev who were making their debuts for the senior team, providing valuable experiences for future competitions. The full squad, was Tom Evans, James Perry, Isaac Morris-Shapiro, Gigi Ionesco, Bruce Butson, Eleanor Woollven, Isaac Joyce, Edward Evans, Bryn Chiswell-Jones, Peter Briffitt, Samuil Vasilev, Adam Barringer and Ella Weeks.
A very well done to all the squad and we are looking forward to the next round after Christmas.
If you would like to join the Chess Club, we meet every Tuesday lunchtime in W6 under the guidance of Mr Skeen. All standards are welcome.
