Young Rugby Stars Shine on BBC Radio Bristol
Claire Carter of BBC Radio Bristol recently featured two inspiring Churchill students, Chelsea and Megan, who play for the North Somerset Barbarians, on her show Extra Time. The duo shared their remarkable journeys into rugby, highlighting their resilience and passion for the sport.
Despite managing a serious spinal condition, Megan transitioned to rugby after excelling in gymnastics and football, with encouragement from her father, who is one of the club's coaches. Chelsea, a dedicated young carer, played rugby when she was young but fell out of love with the sport. Through a fixture with PE in Year 9, she was re-inspired to begin the sport again. Both girls credit rugby as a vital outlet for enjoyment in their busy lives.
The North Somerset Barbarians, a cluster team uniting players from Clevedon, Yatton, and Nailsea/Backwell, provides a thriving space for around 30 girls to hone their skills. Training takes place weekly on Tuesdays from 6-7 pm, with fixtures typically held on Sunday afternoons.
Chelsea and Megan's hard work and determination saw them selected for the England Rugby Player Development Squad for Somerset U16s, a testament to their talent and dedication. Their stories inspire young athletes throughout the Academy.
