Are you the Academy’s next wordsmith? The Vocabulary competition is coming!

Launching on Monday 14th October, students from Years 7 to 11 will face 10 extremely challenging words during tutor time, and they will have the task of selecting the right definition from four possible multiple-choice answers. Those who get more than eight answers correct will progress to the next round!

The competition aims to identify which students have developed the widest vocabulary and can accurately identify the meanings of tricky words. We always remind students at the Academy that the most effective way of exposing themselves to a wide range of vocabulary is through reading books.

Here are some words we used in previous years to give you an idea of the types of words featured in the competition!

  • 1. Homogenous (adj)

  • 2. Hypochondria (Noun)

  • 3. Regress (Verb) (To regress)

  • 4. Ignominy (Noun)

  • 5. Plateau (Verb) (To plateau)

It is always a closely fought competition, and it's great to see students grapple with complex words and consider their prior knowledge to make informed predictions as to the right meanings.

We will then run an exciting Vocabulary final in the Academy Hall, with parents of student finalists invited to attend.

Good luck everybody!
