  • Students dance the night away at the North Somerset Dance Festival

    Published 07/03/25

On Wednesday evening a select group of our dancers performed at the Weston Playhouse Theatre as part of the North Somerset Dance Festival. The annual Dance Festival aims to celebrate dance in both primary and secondary schools in the local area.

This is our first year taking part in the event and we were lucky enough to enter two dance groups. Our first dance was linked to the theme of United by Dance in celebration of the Dance Festival's 20th Anniversary. We looked at two issues young people face today – the use of technology, social media and gangs- and created a piece to show how we can all work together in unison by breaking down barriers.

The second piece was an excerpt from our upcoming Dance Live entry. Dance Live is a national dance competition and next week over 50 students will be travelling to High Wycombe to represent Churchill Academy & Sixth Form. Our piece, ‘Let Her Speak’ is inspired by mankind’s relationship with Mother Nature.

We are so proud of all the dancers involved; they worked so hard in rehearsals and it definitely paid off after their brilliant performance!

  • Academy Sports Rundown: 7th March 2025

Alongside the Girls in Football Festival, Team PE continued with their impressive bout of fixtures this week. Here’s how they got on:

Year 11 boys put Churchill on the map in the Bristol Rugby Tournament

Churchill’s Rugby 7s team travelled to BGS this week to compete in the annual Bristol and Gloucestershire tournament, which saw the boys secure a place in the final!

The boys got off to a great start with a comprehensive victory against Collegiate, running in tries from all over the pitch. This was followed by a comfortable win against Cotham, setting up a showdown with hosts BGS for a place in the semi-final. Playing some of their best, high-intensity rugby, they ran out 28-7 winners.

Next up, and with a place in the final at stake, were Clifton College. Churchill gave their well-drilled opponents no time to settle, taking the game to them from the first whistle and moving the ball effectively. Tenacious defence and clever offloading saw the boys build a three-try lead, which they never looked like relinquishing. Clifton replied with a breakaway try, but Churchill’s place in the final was secured.

The final was against Dean Close, who showcased some excellent rugby and ‘highlight reel’ tries from both teams. Unfortunately, the boys were outscored six tries to two, with the opposition running out worthy winners. Churchill drew much praise from the sidelines, playing with skill, commitment and a flare throughout!

Massive well done to Brandon, Maddock, Ben, Ruben, Milo, Chase, Will, Olly, Ryan, Francis and Charlie.

Year 9 joined in the football fever playing against King Alfred

It was the semi-finals of the Football County Cup this week for our Year 9 boys’ team. Our students put in an impressive performance under the sunshine giving King Alfred a run for their money in the first half.

Kings Alfred made a comeback, finishing with a strong 9-3 final score. We may have missed out on a place in the finals, but we couldn’t be more proud of the skills shown by our team. Well done!

Year 7’s Academy Basketball Team impressed against Priory School

Our Year 7 Basketball team showed incredible basketball development this week, bringing home a 49-20 victory against Priory. The victory was the cherry on top for an exciting game as the two teams put their all in for the win. Well done!
