Further Mathematics

A Level Further Mathematics is a challenging qualification that extends knowledge and understanding beyond A Level Mathematics. Mathematically rich university courses such as Mathematics, Engineering, Finance, Computing or the Sciences look favourably upon, and sometimes require, a Further Mathematics qualification. Students considering these options should strongly consider Further Mathematics, especially those students thinking about studying a fourth A Level.

100% examination; four papers at the end of Year 13

Exam Board:

Edexcel

Entrance Criteria:

Standard Sixth Form entry plus Grade 7 in GCSE Maths.

(However a Grade 8+ is recommended and must be studied alongside A-Level Mathematics)

Topics & Areas Covered:

Pure Mathematics: complex numbers, matrices, differential equations, hyperbolic functions, series

Discrete Mathematics: networks, computer algorithms, game theory, dynamic programming

Career Pathways:

Further Mathematics is particularly valuable to STEM professions. Studying it will set you apart from the crowd. Examples of career possibilities include:

  • Mathematician
  • Engineer (Aeronautical, Environmental, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, …)
  • Astronaut
  • Financial adviser
  • Data analyst
  • Scientist
  • Meteorologist
  • Cryptographer (a.k.a. Spy)

We are really proud of the take up for UKMT National Challenge competitions at A Level. We also support weekly sessions after school as well as trips to Universities.
