Churchill Music Workshop with Clarinettist, Michael Collins
Published 04/10/24We were delighted and honoured to welcome clarinettist Michael Collins to Churchill Academy & Sixth Form today, who joined us to give a workshop to students.
Michael has served as the principal of the Philharmonia Orchestra and London Sinfonietta, performed widely as a soloist, and played on over 35 recordings. He has also served as the conductor of several orchestras and was the principal conductor of the City of London Sinfonia from 2010 to 2018.
Michael led a masterclass for our A Level, GCSE and woodwind players. Several students performed in the masterclass, receiving constructive comments and advice about their playing. Each performer was able to enhance their interpretations of the music performed and allow their own personality and flair as a performer to shine through.
Congratulations to Joey Clausen and Max Taylor, our masterclass performers, for their superb playing.
Michael completes his visit to Churchill performing the opening concert in this season of concerts organised by Churchill Music in St. John’s Church. Michael will be joined by Daniel King-Smith at the piano and they will perform a sumptuous programme in which works by Brahms, Debussy, Poulenc and Lutoslawski will be included.
Tickets: £15.50 Champions of Churchill Music; £19.50 Non-Champions; £1.00 U18’s and students in full time education.
To book your tickets visit Ticketsource or email holly@churchillmusic.org.uk.

Year 7 Students Learn Lifesaving Skills with Heart Starters
Published 04/10/24This week, Year 7 students participated in an exciting learning experience. They partnered with Heart Starters to acquire essential lifesaving skills. The training gave students the opportunity to learn and practice CPR, respond to emergency situations, and use vital equipment such as defibrillators.
The Heart Starters programme introduced students to the basic principles of CPR. Instructors guided them through the critical steps, emphasising the importance of acting quickly during emergencies. Students were also taught how to use a defibrillator, a device that can deliver a lifesaving act to someone suffering from cardiac arrest.
The training also focused on building confidence, so students would feel ready to step in and help during an emergency. Year 7 students walked away from the session equipped with practical knowledge that could one day help them save a life.
Well done Year 7!

Are you the Academy’s next wordsmith? The Vocabulary competition is coming!
Published 04/10/24Launching on Monday 14th October, students from Years 7 to 11 will face 10 extremely challenging words during tutor time, and they will have the task of selecting the right definition from four possible multiple-choice answers. Those who get more than eight answers correct will progress to the next round!
The competition aims to identify which students have developed the widest vocabulary and can accurately identify the meanings of tricky words. We always remind students at the Academy that the most effective way of exposing themselves to a wide range of vocabulary is through reading books.
Here are some words we used in previous years to give you an idea of the types of words featured in the competition!
-
1. Homogenous (adj)
-
2. Hypochondria (Noun)
-
3. Regress (Verb) (To regress)
-
4. Ignominy (Noun)
-
5. Plateau (Verb) (To plateau)
It is always a closely fought competition, and it's great to see students grapple with complex words and consider their prior knowledge to make informed predictions as to the right meanings.
We will then run an exciting Vocabulary final in the Academy Hall, with parents of student finalists invited to attend.
Good luck everybody!
